Single Light Portraiture

DSC_7900.jpg

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of taking some new portraits. Before setting up my equipment I noticed that there was not enough ambient light from the nearby window reaching my subjects. Luckily, I had my flash unit to compensate for this. At times using a single flash can be very beneficial or be problematic if you are not careful. Direct flash on the subject will produce a harsh almost overexposed image. It gives a flat image. However, by placing the flash unit to the left or right of your subject you will produce a more natural and flattering portrait.

When using a flash unit don't shoot straight on use angles!
